Extreme Fire Weather Associated with Nocturnal Drying in Elevated Coastal Terrain of California

چکیده

Abstract The second largest fire shelter deployment in U.S. history occurred August 2003 during the Devil Fire, which was burning a remote and rugged region of San Francisco Bay Area, when relative humidity abruptly dropped middle night, causing rapid growth. Nocturnal drying events higher elevations along California’s central coast are unique phenomenon that poses great risk to wildland firefighters. Single-digit with dewpoints below −25°C is not uncommon summer nights this region. To provide management community knowledge these hazardous conditions, an event criterion established develop climatology nocturnal investigate synoptic patterns associated events. A lower-tropospheric source dry air found over northeastern Pacific Ocean corresponding area maximum low-level divergence subsidence. This forms above marine inversion advects inland overnight layer immerses higher-elevation terrain warm air. An average 15–20 per year occur greater than 700 m their characteristics highly variable, making them challenge forecast.

Marine reserves help coastal ecosystems cope with extreme weather.

Natural ecosystems have experienced widespread degradation due to human activities. Consequently, enhancing resilience has become a primary objective for conservation. Nature reserves are a favored management tool, but we need clearer empirical tests of whether they can impart resilience. Catastrophic flooding in early 2011 impacted coastal ecosystems across eastern Australia. We demonstrate th...

Investigation of the atmospheric circulation anomalies associated with extreme rainfall events over the Coastal West Africa

This study investigates the atmospheric circulation associated with extreme rainfall events over the coastal West Africa. The rainfall data of this study were obtained from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC), spanning from 1981 to 2010. The atmospheric datasets were also obtained from the ERA-Interim reanalysis. The study employed the Z-Index to categorize dry and wet years into...

Coastal evacuations by fish during extreme weather events

An increase in the intensity and frequency of extreme events is predicted to occur as a result of climate change. In coastal ecosystems, hurricanes and flooding can cause dramatic changes in water quality resulting in large mortality events in estuarine fauna. Facultative migration behaviors represent a key adaptation by which animals can evacuate ecological catastrophes, but remain poorly stud...

Restoring surface fire stabilizes forest carbon under extreme fire weather in the Sierra Nevada

Climate change in the western United States has increased the frequency of extreme fire weather events and is projected to increase the area burned by wildfire in the coming decades. This changing fire regime, coupled with increased high-severity fire risk from a legacy of fire exclusion, could destabilize forest carbon (C), decrease net ecosystem exchange (NEE), and consequently reduce the abi...
